In my defense, I think anybody with a heart would get a little emotionally invested in these characters. Funny, wise, compassionate, rewarding, and will do things to your heart and tear ducts. Some writers just have a voice that I want to keep hearing, and Rosalind is one of those. I have loved every book of this series, but this one is destined to go in my group of favorites that I come back to again and again - like watching a favorite movie over and over! First of all, the writing is just spectacular Rosalind has a unique way of setting scenes and building them out, and there were moments that I just thought "wow - that is so beautifully written But of course characters and story are what we readers love, and this one has it all Marko is another awesome alpha male New Zealand All Black rugby hero with a soft, sweet, quite unexpected center, and Nyree is a delightful new heroine who sees people by their "color" but nothing to do with skin!
A youthful crush that's been locked deep but not quite conquered springs to life again when Marko and Nyree "run" into one another years later. The supporting cast of characters is fantastic too, including Ella - an amazing teenage cousin, Victoria, Kors, Kane, Marko's family - especially his mother with her daily "Cards", and plenty of familiar people as well, like Hugh and Josie - how wonderful to intersect with them again!!
Your emotions will run the entire spectrum - from a dog wedding that will have you laughing out loud to a gut-wrenching emotional scene likely to bring real tears to your eyes. Be prepared to laugh, cry, squirm for sure! The story is fantastic, but it is really the characters that make this a book I loved. I have to say Marko is one of my top three male protagonists of the series. Marko steps up without any hesitation to help his cousin Ella when she needs help. She is family, and he might be treading unfamiliar water, but he is immediately all in to be there for her whatever she needs.
James also does a good job of making male characters sound male. Marko can be gruff and clueless when it comes to minor things, but that makes him sound like an authentic person rather than a perfect guy for Nyree to fall in love with. I like Nyree a lot. Nyree is an artist, and like a lot of us, she is juggling several jobs, some of which she hates, to support the job she likes.
Like a lot of us, she doesn't like to work out.
She has insecurities, but they come out naturally, and are never irritating I hate when a female's insecurities become an albatross for a character or story. She is strong and not afraid to be who she is or put up with crap. She has a challenging relationship with her parents that she doesn't need fixed by her boyfriend, she is already managing it herself fine. I absolutely loved it whenever she put Marko in his place.

Last, but not least is Ella. Ella is a smart, confident, wise, kind, compassionate independent teenager. These traits are always front and center and are never overshadowed by the fact that she is also pregnant. Her pregnancy just provides opportunities to show how much she cares about doing her best. Unplanned pregnancy is a subject that can be tricky to write about, especially to a large audience with different views and experiences. James absolutely nails it and created a wonderful, human and beautiful character.
