Auckland felt like a boring backwater, to be honest. There are some awfully good world class restaurants there but very little else to recommend it. After being bored out of skulls there, my partner and I took a minute ferry ride to Waiheke, a beautiful little island off the coast of Auckland and truly enjoyed it for days. The South Island is amazing, though, and I can't recommend it enough. If you can, take an overnight cruise out of the Doubtful Sound into the Tasman Sea.

To be fair to the North Island, we haven't been to the north of Auckland, which is the Maori country but it's reputed to be beautiful in a very wild, unspoilt way.

The people were super nice and friendly everywhere we went, more so then, say, Australians. I don't understand what your problem is.

I don't really have a problem with it, actually. I have a problem with your having made an implicit assessment of it without having seen it. Aussie here who visits NZ a lot. Hot men. Friendly people with a wicked sense of humour. Much more socially progressive than Australia too. Been, but only to the South Island. Which was rather damning, so we didn't.
